Match Report Whitecraigs v Glenrothes 23/02/2008
Whitecraigs Continue Promotion Push
Whitecraigs travelled to Glenrothes hoping to cement their position at the top of National 3. Travel plans were disrupted by the gale force winds which meant that Whitecraigs arrived late and had a rushed warm up. This lack of preparation was evident from the kick off as Glenrothes, playing with the considerable elements, took the game to the away side.
Whitecraigs let the home side run at them and after 25 minutes found themselves 14 points down. At this point Craigs knuckled to the task and Laidlaw scored a try just before half time, to make the mid point score 14 – 5 to Glenrothes. It had been a very physical game and 10 minutes into the second half the Glenrothes no 3 was correctly yellow carded for punching. This proved the spur that Whitecraigs needed and turned the superior numbers and pressure into points.
Firstly, Little scored in the corner, secondly winger Kemp in the same place and then the captain Moffat scored and converted, to take the score to 22-14 to Whitecraigs. Moffat’s try secured the bonus point. This proved to be the final score and Craigs were pleased to take maximum points from this potential banana skin of a fixture.
Coach Jim Henderson was relieved with the result and was pleased with the way that his young side responded to physical nature of the game. The Craigs front row consisted of two seventeen and one eighteen year old and with a further two seventeen and one eighteen year old in the team, there is great potential in this side.
Next week, it is Kilmarnock at home in the Shield and hoping that Whitecraigs can continue their winning form.
