THE eagerly awaited top of the table clash between Whitecraigs and Lenzie turned into a damp squib on Saturday.
As the wind and rain came howling down the players had to battle hard against the difficult conditions.
After a hotly contested match it was the travelling Lenzie fans that got the result they were looking for.
From the off it was clear how closely matched the sides were with hard tackles flying in all over the pitch.
Lenzie took the initiative early on and started to exert their authority on the game.
Perfect kicking from the Lenzie stand-off forced ‘Craigs back and pinned them in their own 22-metre area.
Just 20 minutes into the game the incessant pressure paid off when the flawless stand-off stepped back and slotted a wonderful drop kick to open the scoring.
Strong defence from the ‘Craigs boys ensured the score stayed that way until the end of the first period.
After the break Whitecraigs fought hard to get back into the game but were forced to make a change after Mahindru was taken out by a shoulder charge.
And Lenzie took advantage of the enforced change as they pressed forward looking to kill the game.
But ‘Craigs escaped when Lenzie missed two kickable penalties within minutes of each other.
This reprieve sparked the home team into action and for the final half hour were camped in opposition territory determined to grab the winning score.
With just minutes remaining captain Moffat thought he had snatched a draw but his penalty shot from over 40 metres dipped agonisingly under the bar.
On a horrendous day for running rugby Lenzie ran out deserved 0-3 winners and now move above Whitecraigs in the table.
Next week gives ‘Craigs a welcome break from league action when they take on struggling Greenock in the cup.
And they will be looking to get back to winning ways as they prepare for the crucial final league matches of the season and continue their push for title glory.
