So a final game of the season, but not the result we were hoping for.
We were missing a few troops on Sunday, Charlie, Mikey, Tom, Daniel M, Daniel K, Scott, Calum and of course Oli. Oli perhaps the biggest headline, a injury to his toe that can only really be compared to David Beckham's metatarsal break in 2002. Quite rightly a hot topic of discussion among those gathered on the touch line (including Oli).
Back to the game. We played 13 aside, so more space for the backs and our visitors possessed some bulk and pace in the their back line, so it shaped up for an open attacking game. The first 20 was tight with the team exchanging scores, Max going over for our first score. Munro added a second and we finished the third period tied. The second period did not start well shipping three tries in as many minutes, with some timid tackling, it was looking like despite the great weather it would be a dim afternoon. We then lost Max and Fin due to injury. Fin the only player to play every game this season and Max to knee injury. We were going from dim to gloomy.
However, not for the first time, we fought back. With Munro playing at 10, Harry at 13, Mikail in the front row we built some pressure and Andy went over in the corner with an ankle breaking side step (see attached video for proof it really did happen). Now I think we were all impressed, if not surprised, however post match footage revealed a stricken Max, poleaxed on the side line had managed to raise his head for a moment and gave Andy some secret "backs" advice. Andy obviously followed it to the letter, a good assist from Max. Unfortunately Munro didn't want to take any kicking advice from his bro and the less said about his conversion attempt the better, obviously not one of the core skills trained at the PDH.
Going into the third and final period we were two scores down and Kirk departed after another strong display, resulting in Lee at 15 (yes Lee at Fullback, you heard right). Alex S was tenacious up front, Joe was making some nice breaks, Alex B and Harry were making some strong tackles in midfield and Daniel C was making some nice weaving line breaks. Jamie was starting to get onto the ball (and had one of his best defensive displays on the season), he scored a nice try in the corner and then had the confidence to take the conversion. He missed the kick, short and wide, but let me know quietly that this was done purposefully to make Munro feel better, a nice gesture.
Into the final minutes and we pushed again and again at the line (with some suspect quick tap penalty decisions) and great defence from our visitors. Finally Mikail broke through for a well deserved score, what a great first season he has had. Lee then stepped up to show the others how it should be done, slotting the conversion, in off the post (video again posted). Lee, had a great second and third period, some great breaks and good tackling, well done and a deserved Player of the Match. Our guests were only 2 points ahead, the come back was on.
We threw a few wide balls about and made a couple of breaks but ultimately, turned the ball back to Birkmyre, who broke through and scored in the last play.
We have lost 6 games across the season, all by an average of 10 points. Given that we have played against some tough teams we can be proud of our fighting spirit and look forward to next season with motivation that we can improve and grow as a team.
