1. Introducing Young Players to Rugby

Whitecraigs Rugby Club provides a welcoming and supportive environment where children can discover rugby, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of sport. Our youth section introduces players to rugby in a safe, inclusive and enjoyable way while supporting their development both on and off the pitch.

At Whitecraigs we are committed to developing players while maintaining the core values of rugby: teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. These values guide everything we do and help young people grow not just as players, but as individuals.

Rugby at a young age is about far more than competition. It is about learning to work together, supporting teammates, and developing resilience and confidence that will benefit children throughout their lives.

The Youth Rugby Pathway

Our youth rugby pathway begins with Micros and Minis rugby and continues through to youth teams as players progress through school.

Children typically start in our Micros and Minis sections where the focus is on learning the game through fun, structured activities that develop fundamental rugby skills.

  • Learning basic rugby skills
  • Building confidence with the ball
  • Developing coordination and movement
  • Understanding teamwork and communication
  • Most importantly, enjoying the game

At these early stages boys and girls train and play together in mixed teams. As players move into the older youth age groups, teams are structured separately while continuing to follow the same player development principles.

Our coaching approach follows the development framework provided by Scottish Rugby, ensuring that training and matches are delivered in an age-appropriate way that prioritises player welfare and enjoyment.

The Benefits of Rugby for Young People

Sport plays an important role in the development of young people. Rugby in particular provides a wide range of benefits that support both physical and personal growth.

Physical Fitness
Rugby develops strength, coordination, agility and overall fitness. Training sessions involve a variety of fun activities and games that help children stay active while improving their athletic ability.

Mental Wellbeing
Taking part in team sport helps children build confidence, manage challenges and develop resilience. Being part of a supportive team environment can have a positive impact on mental wellbeing and self-esteem.

Teamwork and Respect
Rugby places a strong emphasis on respect for teammates, coaches, opponents and referees. Players learn the importance of working together and supporting others.

Discipline and Sportsmanship
Children learn to follow rules, listen to coaches and show good sportsmanship, helping build character both on and off the pitch.

The Value of Outdoor Sport

Many of our sessions take place outdoors at Whitecraigs, giving children the opportunity to enjoy fresh air, open space and active play.

Outdoor sport encourages children to stay active, develop confidence in their physical abilities and enjoy being part of a team environment away from screens and indoor activities. During the winter months some training may take place indoors at facilities in the local area.

Getting Started at Whitecraigs

The best way for a child to discover rugby is simply to come along and try it.

Whitecraigs offers a free trial period where new players can attend training sessions before deciding whether they would like to join the club. After contacting our Development Officer, families will be guided through the next steps and advised on the training schedule for the appropriate age group. Training is typically held midweek, often on a Wednesday.
